Practical advice
The following recommendations will not only ease the stress of moving but also reduce your cost as you are usually billed on an hourly basis
Selecting a moving company
To verify his inscription in the « Registre des Entreprises du Québec » (REQ)
To verify with the « Office de la Protection du Consommateur » (OPCQ) if there is any complaint about him
Verify if their trucks and equipment look safe and clean
Ask friends, family or co-workers for references
Ask what type of Insurance coverage they have (donc pas de changement)
To verify what happens if they break or loose something. Is there any franchise to pay? If so, what amount?
Once you have selected your moving company:
Agree on your date and time for moving
Have the departure and arrival addresses on hand for the movers
Make sure you receive a written contract before moving date
A few weeks before moving:
Accumulate boxes and paper for packing
Pack rarely used objects
Identify on each box its contents and the room at destination
Clearly identify boxes containing "fragile" items or to be manipulated with special care
Make sure you have advised various services such as insurer, telephone, cable, etc. as to the date you are moving
A few days before moving:
Make sure all items are packed and boxes clearly identified and secured
Attach lose items such as brooms and curtain rods
Place all your boxes in a single room on the first floor, preferably grouped by rooms at destination
You can leave your clothing in your drawers
Disconnect electrical appliances such as stove, dishwasher, etc.
Dismantle any items which may be cumbersome to your move, such as bed frames and any other furniture.
Moving day:
If possible, obtain the keys to the elevator
Supervise the movers
Verify your furniture before they leave and note any breakage or scratches. If a problem arises make sure the person responsible for moving your belongings is made aware of the situation and document the information
